Happy New Year!

I hope your New Year is starting off in a great way! The first couple days here in Sherman Oaks have truly been beautiful. The rain that we have gotten lately is certainly needed, but like most of you, I will certainly be glad when it is over. It’s so great to see our neighborhoods so green from all the rain. Did you know that most of the trees and shrubbery you see in the San Fernando Valley were imported and planted? Most of Southern California was scrub brush and barren desert, with irrigation and years of landscaping, it’s quite a visual paradise. Now that we have gotten into the New Year, I always begin to think of spring just around the corner. It is a good idea to start planning and preparing any landscaping additions you may want to do to improve the curb appeal and overall value of your property. This is the perfect time of year to start a few seedlings in your window seal and to order any saplings you may want to plant. There is a great website to help you with this. It is from the Arbor Foundation, found at www.arborday.org. It will help you to identify the proper trees to choose in your area for growth rate and overall size. If you go on line and sign up you can get some free trees! If you don’t want them for yourselves, you can have them sent to your friends. One thing to keep in mind, it is important whenever you are digging more than a foot deep in your property to call your local gas company first. It is called the underground service alert by SoCal Gas, http://www.socalgas.com/safety/pipeline.shtml. They will send out one of their representatives to put a flag in the ground in any areas that may cause damage to underground power and gas. It is a free service and great idea when you are going to do your own landscaping.

I hope you will have a chance to get out and enjoy these beautiful blue skies before the next wave of rain hits us. Have a great week!
